An astounding thing happened this week: In a professional space, egos were in charge and messes were made. And, because I have smart friends, and I listen to their sage advice, I was able to extricate myself from the drama, build a new relationship, and expand my offerings within the space three-fold.
Another example: I received the proof of the interior design of my forthcoming book, “Your Embodied Life” and immediately noticed some small errors and the need for one more illustration. Instead of panicking about how to document the errors correctly, I reached back to the editor and illustrator and asked if they had the time and capacity to help. See: they have expertise I do not. They can do this labor with an integrity I cannot. I am a writer, not an editor—as I’m sure you know. Ha!
I say all of this to encourage anyone reading this to stop banging your head against the problem—whatever it is—and instead, think about who you know who may specialize in solving the very type of problem you face. Ask for help. Give their advice a think, then forge ahead better equipped to handle it. Rinse and repeat.
And, when someone comes to you for help. Help them. It’s that simple.
The actual payoff? I’m sitting here writing this brief missive full of gratitude for three people in my life that I truly admire. I feel so damn lucky to call them “my people” and to know that I am one of theirs. The rest? Gravy.
Wishes for you: Keep connecting. Go outside. Be joyful and visible. Take up your space and hold the door wider for others. And, if you’re in DC, I’ll see you September 2nd at 10am at Columbus Circle at Union Station.
k.k. :)
